LINCOLN, Neb. - A player expected to be a major contributor this coming season has left the Nebraska football program.

At his Thursday morning post-practice press conference, Nebraska head coach Scott Frost announced that wide receiver Zavier Betts was no longer on the team. No additional information was provided regarding Betts leaving the program.

Betts appeared in every game last season, starting five. He caught 20 passes for 286 yards. He also carried the ball three times for 109 yards and a touchdown, including an 83-yard touchdown run against Northwestern, the longest rush by a Husker since 2012.

In 18 career games, Betts caught 32 passes for 417 yards and a touchdown.

Betts was the highest rated in-state recruit for the Huskers in over a decade, coming to the program from Bellevue West after a career in which he accumulated over 3,300 receiving yards.

As a senior, Betts helped Bellevue West to a 13-0 season and the Class A state title by catching 64 passes for 1,185 yards and 17 touchdowns, averaging nearly 19 yards per reception. Following his senior season, Betts was named an honorary captain of the Omaha World-Herald All-Nebraska team. It marked Betts’ third straight year on the All-Nebraska team, as he became the fifth three-time All-Nebraska player in the 99-year history of the team. Betts was also tabbed as a three-time first-team Super-State selection by the Lincoln Journal Star.

Frost wouldn't say Thursday if Betts could possibly return to the team, saying only that he's not with the team right now.
