Lourdes Announces Winners of National History Day District Competition
Lourdes Central Catholic middle school students participated in the 2022 National History Day Virtual District Competition held at Peru State College last month.
NEBRASKA CITY-Lourdes Central Catholic middle school students participated in the 2022 National History Day Virtual District Competition held at Peru State College last month. Winners of the district competition were announced on March 3rd during a virtual awards ceremony. Congratulations to the following Lourdes students who placed in a junior-level category at districts and will advance to the Nebraska State competition at Nebraska Wesleyan on April 9th:
National History Day State Qualifiers:
· Annastyn DuVal & Amelia Moody—1st Place Junior Group Exhibit, The Petitions Against the Annexation of Hawaii
· Lillian Dorman & Drake White—2nd Place Junior Group Exhibit, Chernobyl: The Nuclear Explosion the Rocked the World
· Grace Baxa, Josephine Bennett, & Brooklyn Borer—2nd Place Junior Group Website, Dorothy Day: The Legendary Catholic Social Activist
· Lauren Brehm—1st Place Junior Individual Exhibit, “Nothing More American” The Establishment of the National Parks
· Mikayla Meyer—3rd Place Junior Individual Exhibit, The Mother of the Civil Rights Movement, Ella Baker
· Susan Kincaid—2nd Place Junior Individual Paper, American Equality: The Debate Over Suffrage
· Amelia White—1st Place Junior Individual Website, We Are More Than Housewives
In addition, Mary Misner received third place at districts for her Junior Individual Website titled “The 1980 Summer Olympic Boycott.”
The National History Day theme for this year is “Debate and Diplomacy.” Lourdes Middle School teacher Wendi Buggi serves as the sponsor of National History Day and helps guide and prepare students for the contest.
Nebraska National History Day (NE:NHD) is a non-profit education program based in Lincoln, NE. Established in 1985, NE:NHD offers academic programs that engage middle- and high-school students throughout Nebraska annually in conducting original research on historical topics of interest. These research-based projects are entered into contests at the local level, where the top student entries have the opportunity to advance to the State Contest at Nebraska Wesleyan University in Lincoln. Top ranking state contest projects have the opportunity to advance to the National Contest held at University of Maryland at College Park. National History Day seeks to improve the quality of history education by providing professional development opportunities and curriculum materials for educators.
