NEBRASKA CITY – The Otoe County Sheriff’s Office will be participating in the “ U Drive. U Text. U Pay” awareness campaign April 4 – 10.

A sheriff’s office press release says extra deputies will conduct high visibility patrols with emphasis on cellular device laws.

The U Drive. U Text. U Pay campaign reminds motorists of the dangers of texting while driving. It is illegal in 48 states, including Nebraska.

The sheriff’s office says drivers age 16 to 24 have a higher rate of violations, but all drivers are at risk from distracted driving crashes.

Driving tips:

  • If you must send or receive a text, pull over to a safe location and park your car first.
  • If  you have passengers, appoint a designated texter to handle all your texting
  • If you can’t resist the temptation to look at your phone, keep it in the trunk.

The mobilization is funded by a grant from the Nebraska Office of Highway Safety.
