JOHNSON - Humboldt-Table Rock-Steinauer (HTRS) found itself trailing by three at halftime Monday night in the first round of the boys basketball D1-1 Subdistrict at Johnson-Brock High School.

But fellow seniors Nicolas Knudson and Gage Schaardt combined for 34 points to lead a second-half rally for the Titans. HTRS (11-14) outscored McCool Junction 31-13 after halftime to advance to the semifinals with a 52-37 win.

The No. 4 seed Titans got into foul trouble early in the first half and blew a seven point lead in the second quarter, allowing the No. 5 seed Mustangs (11-10) to seize control going into the locker room.

The Titans leading scorer Schaardt picked up two first-half fouls and senior Andrew Stalder was tagged with three. Junior Ryken Davis was inserted for Stalder, but he too would pick up three fouls in the first half.

Coach Mike Schaardt sat Stalder for the entire third quarter and used a combination of Davis and freshman Hunter Bohling to get to the fourth quarter. The strategy worked well and HTRS defended well without fouling in the third.

The Titans only allowed five points in the third, and the defensive stops helped them get easier opportunities in transition as the game went on.

Senior Chase Wilkinson scored a team-high 11 points to lead the Mustangs  and junior Trenton Neville added 7 points including two 3-pointers.

HTRS will play No. 1 seed Johnson-Brock at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday for a spot in the finals. No. 3 Thayer Central will play No. 2 Lourdes Central Catholic in the nightcap at 7 p.m..

The finals are set to tipoff at 7 p.m. on Thursday.
