ALVO, Neb. (AP) — A recall effort that saw petition organizers sue the southeastern Nebraska village of Alvo to get the question before voters has ousted one village board member and retained another.
Residents in Alvo on Tuesday voted more than 2-to-1 to unseat Robin LaPage, the Lincoln Journal Star reported. In a closer vote, board member Larry Langer kept his seat.
Organizers who sought the recall cited Langer’s then-ownership of a huge and regulation-plagued scrap tire pile on the edge of town, saying that created a conflict of interest for Langer and that he had misused his position for personal gain. Organizers accused LaPage of misappropriation of village funds and being disengaged from her duties.
The organizers collected enough signatures to force a recall vote of the two, but the village board voted 5-0 in October not to move forward with the election. Organizers sued, and a judge ordered the election to proceed, ruling that state election law isn’t negotiable.
