County board split over letter to dispatch provider
Richardson County Commissioner Rick Karas says local 911 dispatching could return

FALLS CITY – Following a closed session Tuesday, Richardson County commissioners voted to inquire about canceling its contract with Southeast Communications 911 Center.
The closed session was called to discuss an agenda item listed as an incident at the intersection of highways 75 and 8. Radio traffic indicated several people involved in traffic accident that required emergency services.
Commissioner Rick Karas moved to send the letter saying problems with dispatching remain six months into the contract.
Karas: “It’s ridiculous for what we’re paying. If we send the letter, things will either straighten out or, you know what, we’ll move it back to the sheriff’s office.”
David Sickel voted in favor of sending the letter and Commissioner John Caverzagie voted against. Caverzagie said the county should assess the situation after a meeting with emergency service providers and the dispatch center.
