LINCOLN - A 28-year-old transient has been found guilty of the stabbing death of a former Nebraska City man in July of 2020.

A jury found Roy Wyrick  guilty of second degree murder and use of a deadly weapon to commit a felony in the death of Jeremy Lane.

Lincoln police responded to a report of a fight near Goodhue and D streets and found the 37-year-old Lane unresponsive. He was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital.

A Lancaster County court found Wyrick mentally incompetent to stand trial due to mental illness worsened by methamphetamine use.

Once the factor of methamphetamine was removed, the court ruled that Wyrick's competency was restored.

The homeless Wyrick  told evaluators that he had been attacked before by an unknown person and did not know Lane. He said he went to the apartments in the Goodhue area to visit a friend and ended up defending himself against Lane.

Wyrick's account given to investigators did not match a video of the incident.

Court records say Wyrick said he does not remember the stabbing, but he remembers checking a knife for blood before putting it back in his pocket and running away. He said he threw the knife in a dumpster.

Sentencing is scheduled for Feb.22.
