Sports complex launches fund raising website

NEBRASKA CITY - A sports complex committee has begun fund raising for a $7 million complex on a 29-acre property near north 19th Street and Orchard Drive in Nebraska City.
The city purchased the property at 1419 N. 19th St. for $600,000 in 2021 with exception of about 3,600 square feet of the Elmwood Cemetery. The city says pledges from private foundations over the next three years will pay for the land purchase.
Although soccer fields, at an estimated cost of $800,000, will come first, City Parks Commissioner Patrick Wehling said an engineering study suggests grading the entire property at the same time.
In addition to four soccer fields, the plan includes four ball fields, concession, maintenance building, restrooms, playground and parking. Wehling said there are benefits to establishing a one field in the dimensions used by college baseball teams.
