HUMBOLDT – A trio of supporters set out to make the cancer memorial garden at Humboldt a place of joy despite the misery of cancer with a Christmas light display that includes messages of hope and a line up of Christmas dignitaries from Rudolph to the Grinch.

Even Santa and Mrs. Claus turned out for a night at the garden Sunday.
Mrs. Claus said the beautiful lights in the garden remind her of home, where she and Santa are busy getting ready for the big night.

Mrs. Claus: “I make sure all the elves are staying in line and I help make sure the reindeer have everything they need for their long flight on Christmas Eve, but my most important job is to make sure Santa is ready for all the cookies and milk that night.”

Santa commented on the pre-Christmas austerity measures that lighten the load for the reindeer.

Claus: “She doesn’t let me eat milk and cookies until Christmas Eve. That way Santa can watch his weight a little bit.”

Lois Luthy, garden club president, Jan Wilhelm and Rick Karas said they put up the lights to make a bright spot for the holidays.

Luthy: “We’re praying for a cure for cancer, but we’re wishing peace and happiness to those who are struggling and suffering with it also.

Wilhelm: “So we’re trying to bring some happiness and joy.”

Organizers say over 300 cups of cocoa and 16 dozen cookies were served in first two hours of Sunday’s event and the display has been viewed by hundreds during the season.

Flowing waterfalls, sleighs, angels and even the abominable snowman were on hand to spread the Christmas joy.
