Auburn proposes state loan for wastewater improvements
AUBURN – The cost of water is rising in Auburn.
The Board of Public Works estimates 2021 water sales around 100 million gallons, an increase of 2 million gallons compared to last year.
The average customer’s monthly cost was $8.14 per 1,000 gallons. In 2021, the cost rose to $8.54, an 8 percent increase. The average monthly bill rose from over $38 to $41.
The 2021 rate increase has increased revenue and an additional 5 percent is expected in 2022.
The rate increase and increased water sales have resulted in a $40,000 increase in water revenue.
The water department proposes replacing five hydrants and two wells.
The Auburn Board of Public Works is pursuing a state Department of Environment and Energy loan for wastewater improvements.
The utility has identified over 8,000 feet of wastewater main that needs repair, including areas cause backups and allow outside water to enter the collection system.
The utility also proposes relocating a 12-inch water main line that is currently running through a section of wastewater main.
The water line will be relocated to meet required separation.
