Doane to add women's wrestling in 2022

CRETE - The Doane athletic program is adding a women's wrestling program.
Today, the university announced that the board of trustees approved the decision and work will begin immediately. Women's wrestling, one of the fastest growing sports, now brings Doane's athletic program to 23 competitive sports. In May, the Nebraska School Activities Association (NSAA) approved the sanctioning of girls wrestling and holding a state championship. It was previously an emerging sport. Currently, there are 37 NAIA universities and colleges with women's wrestling, with more adding it this year.
Dana Vote, the current Doane men's wrestling coach, will be promoted to Director of Wrestling, while still coaching the men's squad, but will oversee the development of the women's wrestling program. He will also head up recruiting until a women's coach is named.
According to a statement released by the university, recruiting will begin immediately and the program already have some experienced female wrestlers interested in joining the team.
