Frost prescribes mental toughness
Chinander said the defense is focused on what it can control
Nebraska defensive coordinator Erik Chinander and Head Coach Scott Frost commented on the defensive performance in the loss to Michigan State.
Coach Chinander said he was comfortable with the defense going out first when Nebraska won the toss and was pleased with the speed and violence of the defensive unit.
Chinander said the defensive players are not pointing fingers after the overtime loss.
Chinander: We got good guys on the defense and they are not finger pointers. They are not complainers. They want to work they want to get better they want to do their job. They know that they can control their attitude they can control their effort and they can control the preparation and that is what they are going to do."
Head Coach Scott Frost said the defense responded well after halftime.
Frost: “That was elite defense that we played in the second half – 15 yards in the second half. It didn’t even cross my mind that we were going to give up a punt return here. I was upset that we didn’t get a first down and keep the clocking moving. We should have. We should have executed a little better on a second-down play. And you look up and despite the guys doing everything right for a half of football and dominating a half of football you get that momentum swing and take another gut punch.”
Coach Frost said he is spending time with the offensive line and demanding improvement from players across the roster.
Frost: “We’re a tough team physically. We’ve got to be a tougher team mentally. It doesn’t take any physical toughness to stay set and wait for a snap count. It doesn’t take any physical toughness to let go of a quarterback when the whistle blows. Those are the things that we have to make the right decision in the moment.”
