SYRACUSE – The corner of Sixth and Midland Streets in Syracuse is getting a new look as it transforms into the Sixth Street Community Garden.

Committee members Elaine Zahn, Julie Zahn, Colleen Christensen, Brianne Wilhelm and Terry Zimmers saw a need to beautify the corner  after the home was destroyed by fire in July of 2012.

Jill Crook and Tyler Collin from the Syracuse Parks Department, along with the garden committee, reached out to the Nebraska Statewide Arboretum and the UNL Forestry Department to transform the now vacant lot.

Creating a preliminary sketch,  the committee now knew the cost of the project moving forward.  Katy Zahn Biehl, a local artist, was contacted to draw a contributions tree, the number at the top of the tree is $35,000.

The Diane Bechtold and Bob Bruns families have donated memorial benches to be added to garden.

The United Methodist Church of Syracuse will be donating a bird bath and pergola.

The pergola will set on a 30-foot circle in the center of the garden. Its features include benches on the interior and stained-glass windows on either side.  Vines will be planted at all four corners to create shade and interest.

Additional features to include bistro tables and chairs, solar fixtures to illuminate the pathways, metal benches, and  a bronze sculpture located within the garden, there will be a pollinator Garden area along with native and non-native trees shrubs and perennials.
