Nebraska City closing school early due to heat
NEBRASKA CITY – Nebraska City Public Schools are planning early dismissal on Thursday due to the heat.
A notice from the school on Wednesday said heating and air conditioning systems in multiple buildings are not able to “maintain quality learning conditions” due to the sustained heat and humidity.
The National Weather Service issued a heat advisory for 11 counties until 8 p.m. on Thursday with heat index values near 105 degrees. Cities impacted include Nebraska City, Sidney, Hamburg, Tecumseh, Auburn, Falls City and Table Rock.
Nebraska City School Superintendent Mark Fritch said the HVAC systems work well enough in the morning, but by the afternoon they are not keeping up.
He said specific dismissal times will be shared by the buildings.
The Nebraska City Airport reports a heat index of 90 degrees around noon on Wednesday.
