Pioneer Boys Earn First Win, Syracuse Lady Rockets Stay Hot

Nebraska City and Syracuse split a double-header Friday night, adding fuel to the cross-county rivalry.

NEBRASKA CITY- Nebraska City and Syracuse split a double-header Friday night, adding fuel to the cross-county rivalry. 
 
Syracuse won the girl’s side of the match-up 55-26 in part to a 7-0 run to start the second quarter. With that momentum, the lady rockets went on a 25-6 run in the second half to cruise to a 5-0 start to the season. Leading scorers in the game were junior Lily Vollertson with 13 for Syracuse and 9 points for sophomore Halle Thompson for Nebraska City. 
 
On the boy’s side of the double-header we saw a similar run. The pioneers looking for its first win on the season, would start the first half out with four three-pointers from junior Chase Brown. Nebraska City would head to the locker rooms up by just two points, 24-22. The second half started off with a run on the boy’s side for Nebraska City with a 12-0. The pioneers would notch its first win this year, and against Syracuse for back to back years, 62-44. Junior Braden Thompson ended with a game high 22 points. Brown scored 20. For the rockets, it was senior Mitchell Brinkman in double digits with 10.
