Recall Signatures In Hands Of County
HUMBOLDT - Mary White of Humboldt reports that she turned in signatures Tuesday aimed at recalling Mayor Robert Mendenhall.
White, who has a quilting business on the town square, initiated the recall petition claiming the mayor misused his authority to fire a former city clerk and told News Channel Nebraska that he has lost confidence with some voters.
White said 113 valid signatures are needed to force the city council to schedule a recall election within 50 to 80 days. White turned in 127 signatures.
She said she encountered some negative reaction to the petition, but she still feels she did the right thing under the circumstances.
Mayor Mendenhall is asking voters to allow him to complete the remaining two years on his term.
He said changes to city hall staff were in Humboldt's best interest and said the city's finances continue to improve.
