SYRACUSE - Mohawk Street seems like a race  track, according to a Syracuse woman who is proposing stop signs.

Phyllis Erkes, who lives just south Mohawk’s intersection with Ninth Street, met with the city council this month for a second time to ask for a four-way stop.

Mrs. Erkes said there is a large amount of traffic that uses Mohawk Street and she estimates speeds are typically up to 40-50 mph coming down the hill.

She stated that when she last approached the city council, she was told that since the intersection is at  at the bottom of a hill a stop sign could not be put there.

Mrs. Erkes is asking again for "the safety of our community and little ones"  that it be looked into.

Acting Mayor Orv. Gigstad directed Street Superintendent Jeff Vogt  to do a study and report back.

Bruce Neemann of the Syracuse Fire Department reported that the fourth stage of replacing the bunker gear is complete.  All the firefighters now have new coats and pants, the cost per set is $1,775 times five sets for  a total of $8,875.

Sheriff Colin Caudill reported three arrests following a theft report. He said the property was recovered within an hour.

The sheriff’s office had  71 calls for service, 37 of those calls were for the city of Syracuse.
