Auburn Replaces Statement For Pre-Born With Inherent Dignity For Everyone
AUBURN – The Auburn City Council agreed Monday to replace its statement from last March that declared the pre-born as citizens with an inalienable right to life.
Councilwoman Katy Billings, who opposed the statement in March, offered a compromise Monday.
Billings: “I would like to make a motion that we replaced the statement that was affirmed in March with a simple statement that says the City of Auburn shall be known as a city that respects and values the inherent dignity of everyone, period. That simple. That basic.”
Council members arriving at the meeting were greeted with demonstrators outside of city hall.
Demonstrators chanted “vote to remove.”

Organizer Nikki Hayes said the adoption in March of a religious, pro-life statement has negative repercussions for Auburn.
Hayes: “We’re here to let the city council know that we would like for them to vote to remove the recently-adopted religious pro-life statement.”
Hayes and Dr. Gary Enzs told the council that the exclusionary statement will reduced Auburn’s ability to attract new residents, creates unnecessary division and could disqualify the city from some federal grants.

Hayes: “We should be focused on making this a place for all beliefs, opinions and lifestyles and not attempt to create an echo chamber, where only those with specific beliefs and viewpoints are welcome.”
Hayes told the city council she is thrilled with Billings’ statement and the new declaration passed with one dissenting vote.
