Mayhew Cabin Struggles To Reopen
The Mayhew Cabin Board of Directors is raising funds to make the reopening possible.
NEBRASKA CITY- While Nebraska City is cultivating its history by welcoming the statue of J. Sterling Morton, another historical site remains closed.
The Mayhew Cabin was built in Nebraska City, a known “free town” along the Lane Trail, a route used by freedom seekers attempting to reach Iowa after fleeing Missouri.
Following recent events, places such as the Mayhew Cabin and its history take on relevance and, while in other states protesters demand the removal of statues, they ask that the history of the fight for civil rights must be highlighted.
Bill Hayes, Volunteer Director of the Mayhew Cabin says some historians consider the Underground Railroad activity to be the first civil rights movement.
In 2019, Nebraska’s Underground Railroad museum closed due to floodwaters. The Nebraska City City Council has been asked to remedy drainage issues, but has rejected responsibility.
