NEBRASKA CITY - Enough cars to cover a city-mile and their waiving, smiling and sign-toting passengers participated in the teacher parade at Nebraska City High School Tuesday.

Michelle Maybee, president of the Nebraska City PTO, said the PTO hosted the drive-by parade for teachers, staff and students of Northside and Hayward elementary schools.

Maybee: “It kind of gives them a chance to see each other one last time, since school kind of ended all of a sudden and because I know they all miss each other. It’s just nice to be able to see each other again.”

Maybee, a social worker with ResCare Health Services in Nebraska City, said her kindergartener and third grader were among the first to arrive.

Maybee: “They are super excited. They can not wait to be able to see their teachers tonight. When they found out they kept counting down the days until they could see their teachers. Actually, when they got here, they ran up and saw their teachers and gave them a big ‘air hug’ to stay the six feet away from their teachers.”

She said all, except for two or three, of the grade teachers were able to attend.

Maybee: “We have approximately 10 paras, I want to say 15 specialty teachers and both of the school principals that are here tonight.”

Northside Elementary School’s last official school day is May 20. Days to pickup report cards are scheduled Thursday and Friday.
