NEBRASKA CITY - Southeast Nebraska is soon to be freezin' for a reason.
Nebraska Polar Plunge will end its 2020 season with the southeast plunge on March 7 to raise money for Nebraska Special Olympics.
State Trooper Bill Rowell said the plunge will return this year to Wildwood Pond at Nebraska City.
Rowell: “You won’t be able to miss it. We were there last year. Last year we had to saw through 14 inches of ice before we plunged, so it made it even more fun. Colder, but fun.”
Visit Nebraska Special Olympics dot org to register and set up a “first giving” page to make it easier for people to donate to you.
The winter event is an outgrowth of the Law Enforcement Torch Run from the 1980s.

Rowell: “They needed another way or avenue, during the year that would help get the communities in the areas a little more involved and motivated to donate to a good cause, so they came up with the Polar Plunge. It just took off from there.”
Prizes are awarded for most outrageous costume, most original team theme and most money raised, as well as the oldest and youngest plungers.
An after-plunge party is planned at the police training room of the Rowe Safety Complex in downtown Nebraska City.
Rowell, who plunged last year at Wildwood, said it’s not easy to jump into cold water.
Rowell: “It is rather difficult to get people to understand that it’s just a second in and a second out. Get a towel on you, get warmed up and it’s all over it.
It is a good time, believe it or not, and it’s for a good cause.”
Check-ins begin at 1 p.m. and the plunge starts at 2 p.m.
