AUBURN – The Nemaha County Sheriff’s Office received reports of mysterious lights in the sky south of Auburn Tuesday night.

The caller suspected they were the lights from a drone, but the sheriff’s office said a drone was not confirmed.

Drones with a six-foot wing span, described as flying in patterns of up to 30 and in groups of three to four, have been reported in northeast Colorado and more recently in Nebraska. They have been reported flying about 200 feet above the ground.

Some media outlets have described them as having "a mysterious nighttime mission," as they appear at night and have not been photographed at dusk or dawn.

A task force of the FBI, FAA and state authorities has been formed to find the source of the drones at Colorado and Nebraska. A News Channel Nebraska report says authorities suspect there may be a van with antennas to control the drones over rural areas.

Authorities remind residents that shooting down a drone is illegal and dangerous.

Title 18 of United States Code 32 covers unmanned aircraft, meaning sabotage of a drone could carry a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison. The Communications Act of 1934 also outlaws any sort of signal jamming that may cripple the drone.
