Late night fire threatens Fifth Street businesses in Syracuse

SYRACUSE  -- A fire that was called in at 10:38 p.m. on Dec. 19 began in the facades between two buildings located at the west end of 5th Street in Syracuse.

 Wavelengths, which held is grand opening last spring, occupies 206 5th St. and the Beer Stein connects to the building on the east.

Fire Chief Bruce Neemann said the fire appears to have been caused by an electrical short in the junction box on an outdoor sign. The state Fire Marshal has yet to determine that for certain.

Approximately $5,000 damage was done to  both buildings .

Tim Collins, owner of the Beer Stein, said that he was able to open the following morning with wet carpets only. He still does not know who the Good Samaritan was that called in the fire.
