Auburn Declares Nuisance Of Occupied House

AUBURN – The Auburn City Council declared three properties nuisances Monday, including one house that is currently inhabited.
City Attorney Angelo Ligouri said a house at 2304 N St. has signs of the roof caving in and is neglected outside, but there are indicators that someone is living there.
The city council voted proceed to declare the house a health and safety hazard.
Ligouri said Auburn will try to work with the people residing at the house to establish a rehabilitation plan. He said issuing citations for code violations is an option, but the city is interested in getting the residents to clean up and maintain the property.
Ligouri said a property at 1220 Ninth St. has been abandoned, but the city has received a rehabilitation plan for a property at 2500 O St.
In other action, the city council approved a zone change requested by John and Theresa Lindinger at 504 M St.
Lindinger told the city council that he intends to build a 40x40 foot building on the property, which is too large for the current residential zoning.
David Davis of the Planning Commission said the city does not have a lot of commercial lots available for a building like Lindinger proposes and the M Street lots are next to an existing commercial zone.
Ligouri said the lots are not likely to be developed as residential.
An audit report by Massman Nelson and Reinig noted that the city has been debt free since 2018.
The auditor also noted the potential for grant funds that can help city's with infrastructure, such as a new fire station.
The Auburn Community Choir is holding its Christmas Cantana at the Performing Arts Center on the Peru State College campus at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 15.
