NEBRASKA CITY - The eastbound overflow bridge on Highway 2 at the Missouri River between Nebraska City and Interstate 29 opened Friday.

Head-to-head traffic is  maintained on the new bridge and crews are already working on the westbound overflow bridge.

The project design was initiated in April with a goal of completion by spring of 2020.

Two, 40-feet wide and 1,100 feet long bridges allow a re-alignment of the flood control levees and eliminate a pinch point on the Missouri River.

The bridges include seven spans with paved shoulders.

A construction meeting was held on June 11, with first bridge open to traffic 178 days later.
