NEBRASKA CITY – Northside Elementary School in Nebraska City was dismissed early Thursday due to a fire call just after 1 p.m.

Fire Chief Rob Schreiner said there was a slight haze of smoke in a couple of rooms when firefighters responded to an automatic alarm.

Schreiner said it took some time, but firefighters were able to track down the source of the smoke to some melted wires in an air handler. Electricity was shut off to the unit and the threat of fire eliminated.

Schreiner commended new radio equipment in use by the school this year. He said students were evacuated to their assigned areas and teachers outside could communicate with emergency responders and other school buildings.

Students were later relocated to the central office building on 14th Avenue and released to parents.
