PAWNEE CITY – Pawnee County commissioners appointed Braden Lang as county sheriff to replace a Nebraska history maker.

Lang has been a sheriff’s deputy since 2009 and has most recently served as the chief deputy.

Current Sheriff Jayme Reed, who is paired with the Box Butte Sheriff Tammy Mowry as the first females elected sheriff in Nebraska,  submitted her resignation in November.

In her letter of resignation, Reed said she is grateful for the support of residents the past 15 years. She was elected in 2006. She was a Lincoln police officer from 1983 to 1990.

Mowry was also elected in 2006. She started her law enforcement career as an animal control officer in Alliance and soon rose to the ranks of detective.

Lang is expected to take over the office in January.
