WASHINGTON, D.C. – US Sen. Ben Sasse of Nebraska is warning the prison bureau director to come prepared to answer questions about the apparent suicide of sex trafficking suspect Jeffrey Epstein.

The New York City medical examiner’s office concluded in August that Epstein hanged himself in his jail cell, but others point to a broken bone in his neck to suggest that the 66-year-old financier was strangled.

Sen. Sasse sent a letter to Bureau of Prison Director Kathleen Hawk Sawyer saying the public wants answers.

Sasse: “There are a whole lot of people who breathed a sigh of relief who believe their secrets died in that jail cell with him.”

Sawyer is scheduled to speak before the Senate Judiciary Committee on Tuesday.

Sasse: “ While there may be particular details that you cannot yet answer, deflecting difficult questions won’t cut it.”

Sasse: “It is unconscionable that the guy that had all this information on co-conspirators was not guarded each and every minute.”

Sasse wrote to Sawyer: “Wealthy and powerful men raped innocent children, and it is an outrage that so much of the evidence of these crimes died with Epstein while in  your agency’s custody.”

He said the public wants to know why Epstein was put on and then removed from suicide watch in the days leading up to his death. He asked if there is video evidence that Epstein killed himself, noting that one of the cameras is reported to have malfunctioned.

He said both guards tasked with watching Epstein reportedly fell asleep.
