NEBRASKA CITY –  Keep Nebraska City Beautiful finished its AppleJack cleanup with an update for Rotarians about the Crayola Recycling Program and litter free campaigns.

Keep Nebraska City Beautiful sponsored a citywide cleanup prior to the festival and Sally DuBois reported over 100 pounds of litter was collected primarily from the north entrance and downtown areas.

She said she received e-mails with good news about the organization’s mission.

DuBois:  “Saying thank you for your clean up after the parade and I’m like I didn’t do anything. But thank you, I’ll take that. Then I get another one this morning that the wonderful youth group at the Methodist Church took 10 kids out and got four bags of garbage. It’s not because I asked them to, it’s because they were educated and they know that they need to be a part of this community, so this is part of what Keep Nebraska City Beautiful is doing, trying to educate community members that we’re all part of this community and all of need to partake.”

Sue Little updated Rotarians on the Crayola Recycling program at the schools.

Little: “Of course it is to keep plastic markers out of the landfill, but also, another prong, more importantly is to help kids understand their role in protecting the environment.”

Last year Hayward Elementary recycled 925 markers and Northside added 700 for a total of 60 pounds.

Crayola reports in 2013 that 70 tons of expended markers were saved from landfills.

DuBois said Keep Nebraska City Beautiful is developing a new website to promote recycling.

She said Walmart is currently accepting expended ink cartridges and there is a box at her Fourth Corso office to accept items from Gillette’s razor blade recycling program.
