LINCOLN - Nebraska Offensive Coordinator Troy Walters said he is happy with the receiving corps and the team’s depth going into preparations for South Alabama on Aug. 31.

He said J.D. Speilman is able to play both slot receiver and wideout and depth is being developed at the position.

Walters: “You’d like to have six to seven guys that you believe in, that you could put in at any time, one of the focuses this season is to playing fast and selling out. I don’t want guys to hold things in an be on cruise control because they don’t want to get tired, we want guys to go full speed and when you get tired we’ll sub and get some other guys in.”

He said freshman, such as Darien Chase and Dermiyon Houston, may work their way into the rotation.

Walters: “They are doing a good job, but a lot of the other guys – McQuitty, Mike Williams, Andre Hunt – they’ve stepped up their game and are doing well. The freshman have a battle on their hands.”

Walters said Jaevon McQuitty, a sophomore from Columbia, Mo., is playing faster with familiarity with the system and he expects Mike Williams, a senior from Lake City, Fla., to make contested catches and block well on the perimeter.

Walters: “Smaller guys wear down easily, so we have to make sure he’s fresh. He brings and explosive element to this offense that we need and so he’s just got to keep getting better.”

He said the practice focus is turning toward their next opponent, but the competition within the team will continue.

Walters The competition against the defense has been awesome. Going against them everyday has made us better, so we don’t want to lose that.”

He said South Alabama runs a defense similar to Nebraska’s defense.
