KEARNEY, Neb. — Less than a week after attending the Nebraska girls state wrestling tournament in Omaha, Sara and John Cline found themselves in a much different situation.

The Nebraska couple was vacationing in Puerto Vallarta when they heard what sounded like an explosion, following reports that a cartel leader had been killed by Mexican authorities.

“We were out on the boat when we heard the explosion,” Sara Cline said. “Being on the boat was probably the safest place to be.”

At first, many people nearby were unsure what had happened.

“Some people thought it was an earthquake,” Cline said. “Others thought maybe someone was just burning something.”

But as smoke became visible and vendors at a nearby market began packing up, she said the mood quickly changed.

“Everything felt uneasy,” she said. “Usually when we’re down here, restaurants are full and people are laughing and having a good time. This time, it was very quiet.”

After returning to the marina, Cline said her group went back to their hotel and began checking for updates and flight information.

Some travelers had flights canceled and were forced to rebook at significantly higher prices. Cline said her group has not received notice of cancellations but has heard reports of possible airport disruptions.

“We did see a couple of planes take off today, which was relieving,” she said. “It’s just really unknown. We’re taking it minute by minute, day by day.”

Cline said they are staying informed and hopeful they will be able to return to Nebraska safely in the coming days.
