Joan C. Meyer, age 88 of rural Avoca, NE passed away peacefully on Wednesday, February 4, 2026 at Bryan West Medical Center in Lincoln, NE.

Joan Caroline Meyer was born on September 3, 1937 in Nebraska City, NE; the daughter of Rollan F. and Walburga A. (Wirth) Stukenholtz. She grew up and attended school in Nebraska City, graduating from Nebraska City High School with the Class of 1955.

On August 16, 1960, Joan was united in marriage to James G. Meyer at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Nebraska City. Joan was a busy housewife and mother, assisting her husband in farming and raising their sons. She was a very active member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Holy Trinity Guild and served as the Treasurer for church. Joan was also very active in the Avoca Community, where she was on the Avoca Town Hall Committee, organized Avoca Blood Drives and helped organize the Easter Egg Hunt for the Lyons Club. She made visits to those in nursing homes and helped organize BINGO. Joan volunteered at the Matt Talbot Kitchen and the Lourdes (St. Benedict’s) Lunch Program. She enjoyed making quilts and donating them. Joan also helped at many food stands at various farm sales.

Those left to cherish her memory include her husband of 65 years, James Meyer of rural Avoca, NE; sons: Jeffrey Meyer (Madeline) of Des Moines, IA, Kevin Meyer of Wichita, KS and Kurt Meyer of rural Avoca, NE; grandchildren: Marie Meyer, Michael Meyer (Grace), Megan Meyer and Bradley Meyer; one great-granddaughter Maddie Meyer; siblings: Leora Kuwitzky of Seattle, WA and Carl Stukenholtz of Perry, IA; numerous nieces, nephews and other family and friends.

Joan was preceded in death by an infant son Kent James Meyer on October 17, 1964; her parents and siblings: Rose Nelson (Emil), John Stukenholtz (Rita), Rollan Stukenholtz, Kathleen Stukenholtz, Sr. Jean Stukenholtz, Jean Stukenholtz and Louis (Darla) Stukenholtz.

A Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, February 9, 2026 at St. Paulinus Catholic Church in Syracuse, NE. A Graveside Service will be held at 2:00 p.m. at Holy Trinity Cemetery in Avoca.

The family will greet friends from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Sunday (2/8) at Gude Mortuary in Nebr. City. The Rosary will be recited at 3:00 p.m.

Memorials may be given to Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Avoca or the Matt Talbot Kitchen in Lincoln.
