WASHINGTON, D.C. - Sen. Deb Fischer has announced water resource funding from the U.S. Senate’s Appropriations Committee including the Lower Missouri Basin – Nemaha and Atchison Counties Feasibility Study.
The $600,000 study would develop flood risk reduction measures. A U.S. Army Corps of Engineers work plan for 2024 says $200,000 is needed to continue the feasibility study phase near the Cooper Nuclear Station.
Cooper Nuclear Station entered an emergency classification in March 0f 2019 when water levels near the station reached 899 MSL during a flood of the Missouri River basin. The power plant was in a “notification of unusual event” for nine days, but NPPD says there was no threat to plant employees or the public throughout the event.
The Northwest Missouri Comprehensive Economic Development Strategy through 2023 says one third of flood damage in its study area occurs outside of designated flood plains from water going over the banks of streams and rivers and even levee breaks.
Appropriations also provide $2.3 million for the Gering-Ft. Laramie irrigation tunnel, Harlan County dredge equipment, an Offutt dump station and flood risk reduction on the Papillion Creek.
