Sheriff reports double fatality on Highway 2

NEBRASKA CITY – The Otoe County Sheriff’s Office reports the traffic fatality of both drivers in a two-car collision on Highway 2 near Dunbar Friday morning. A teen passenger is hospitalized.

On July 12, 2024, at 5:59 am, Otoe County Sheriff's Office deputies and medical personnel responded to a 2-vehicle injury crash on Highway 2, west of the Highway 67 intersection, near Dunbar.
A preliminary investigation indicates that 44-year-old Tommy Aldana of Nebraska City was driving eastbound on Highway 2 in a Ford Explorer when Aldana crossed the median, colliding with a westbound Toyota Sienna. The driver of the Toyota, 65-year-old Daniel Rys of Gary, Indiana died at the scene. Aldana was transported to St. Mary’s Hospital in Nebraska City where he was pronounced deceased.
A 13-year-old male who was traveling with Aldana was transported to St. Mary’s Hospital for treatment of his injuries.
Highway 2 westbound traffic was closed for four hours while law enforcement processed the crash scene. The Otoe County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the crash. The Nebraska State Patrol is assisting with the investigation by conducting the crash reconstruction.
