AMES, IA - The Iowa High School Boys State Golf Tournament cancelled its second day of competition on Tuesday, May 21, due to weather, making this year's event a single day of golf.

The Sidney boys were the only River Country team to qualify as a whole. The squad settled for a ninth-place finish in Class 1A, carding a 379. The team champ was Boyden-Hull with a score of 300. Sidney was led by the 82 of Hayden Thompson. Individually, however, a great opening round from Hamburg's Keith Thompson gave him the crown. The sophomore wound up shooting a 2-under 69 on Monday to win by a single stroke at the Ames Golf & Country Club.

In Class 2A, no local teams made the cut, but Jade Spangler of Shenandoah qualified individually. Spangler wound up with an 11-over 82, finishing in a tie for 35th. Top honors went to Luke Harwick of Beckman Catholic with a 68. Beckman Catholic won the team title by one stroke.

Looking ahead, the girls competition is scheduled to start this Thursday. None of the River Country golfers were able to advance to the State Tournament.
