ELK CREEK - NioCorp is planning to investigate recycling of magnets as part of its proposed Elk Creek critical minerals project.

The company will examine the feasibility of recycling magnets used in computer hard disc drives, mobile phones and televisions to make new magnets.

A press release says the study is separate from the work to update the Elk Creek project feasibility study, but processes proposed at Elk Creek could be used to separate old magnets back into rare earth products.

NioCorp executive Mark Smith said successful recycling would add value to the processing approach the company intends to deploy in Nebraska.

Chief Operating Officer Scott Honan said the Elk Creek project could provide a rapid solution to establishing a robust magnet recycling capacity in the United States.

Rare earth materials, such as neodymium, praseodymium, terbium and dysprosium are critical to making magnets used in a wide variety of defense and civilian applications.
