Falls City lets eclipse teach, inspire
North Elementary views 84 percent totality
FALLS CITY – Students at North Elementary in Falls City learned about eclipses leading up to Monday’s big event and got to see the 84.3 percent totality from their school yard.
Elementary Principal Shelly Leyden said classroom teachers put together educational experiences pertaining to their grades, including their reading series and scholastic news readers.

Leyden: “Now it’s just a matter of understanding what’s happening and seeing it with their eyes. When you ask a student that’s in age three to eight, mostly, a lot of them have shared it looks like there’s a banana up in the sky, so from their perspective that’s what an eclipse it.”

The eclipse also caught the attention of artists at the Heartland Fine Arts Gallery on Stone Street.

The 2017 eclipse had inspired some local artwork and the women expect the latest celestial rarity to make an impact in the City of Art.
The eclipse lasted about 90 minutes with 84 percent totality around 2 p.m.
