FALLS CITY - Falls City School Superintendent Tim Heckenlively expects guns, parental involvement and special education to be addressed at the 108th Nebraska Legislature, which  begins Jan. 3.

Heckenlively listed key points of recent hearings.

Firearms in Schools: An interim hearing held on Dec. 1 addressed the issue of permitting school resource officers (SROs) or designated school employees, under the direction of the school board, to possess firearms on school premises. Gov. Jim Pillen has extended support for this measure.

Parental Involvement and Communication Bills: Proposed bills aim to increase parental involvement by mandating teachers to post online, on a daily basis, the curriculum to be taught the following day.

Special Education Teacher Incentive Bill: There is a proposal for a bill focused on providing incentives for special education teachers. This bill aims to address the shortage of qualified professionals in special education by offering incentives and support to encourage more individuals to pursue careers in this field.
