FALLS CITY -  A fugitive’s spelling error led to the Richardson County Sheriff’s Office returning him to Madison County where he was sentenced last week to six months in prison for failure to appear in court while out on bail.

A sheriff’s deputy  pulled over a car near Dawson on March 5 and says  a passenger identified himself with a last name spelled Ocken.

When the deputy could not find the name and given birth date on the database, he investigated further and says he learned the man was actually 43-year-old Bill Gonzales.

The deputy says Gonzales told him he was advised to use the name Oncken because they were similar in age and looked the same. The deputy looked up Oncken in the same database and agreed that they looked similar.

Had Gonzales given the correct spelling, the deputy may not have learned that Gonzales was wanted in Nebraska.

The deputy said Gonzales is also a fugitive out of Texas, attempted to deceive law enforcement and had a handcuff key in his pocket during the Richardson County traffic stop.

He is charged with criminal impersonation and habitual criminal.
