Sen. Slama would end secret balloting for chairmanships
Slama says ending secret ballots for committee leadership will promote accountability between lawmakers, their political parties and voters
LINCOLN - State Sen. Julie Slama says ending secret balloting for chairmanships of the Unicameral’s committees should be part of the changes at the state Capitol this January.
In her latest legislative column, Slama says public voting will encourage dialogue and promote accountability between lawmakers, their political parties and constituents.
The Nebraska Examiner reported in September that 17 state senators have pledge to end secret ballots for committees. Slama was not listed among the 17 in the news article, which said Charles Herbster’s political action committee is behind the push to end the unique system for electing committee chairs.
