Peru State softball defeated by No. 13 Grand View

On Tuesday afternoon the Peru State softball team lost 9-0 to No. 13 Grand View at the Bobcats' Centennial Complex Field.

(Peru, Neb.)—On Tuesday afternoon the Peru State softball team lost 9-0 to No. 13 Grand View at the Bobcats' Centennial Complex Field.

The second game of the doubleheader was postponed after the first inning due to continual rain as the Vikings were leading the Bobcats 3-0 after one inning. This game will be resumed at a later date.
 
Peru State is now 8-16 overall and 3-10 in Heart conference play while Grand View is now 18-5 and 7-2 in conference play.
 
In the first inning with one out the Vikings got runners in scoring position from a walk and then a double. A hit by pitch would load the bases for Grand View. Then a single would score the first run of the game.
 
The next batter was walked giving Grand View an early 2-0 lead. A stellar double play by pitcher Alana Krieser (Lincoln) ended the inning. The Vikings scored two runs on two hits and left two on.
 
The 'Cats went 1-2-3 in the bottom of the first. The Vikings reached first on an error with one down and the base runner would advance to second. Another error had the Viking runner from second score as the now extended their lead to three. Grand View scored one run on two errors and left one on base.
 
Peru State went down in order in the home half of the second inning. The Vikings led the top half of the third with a leadoff single, but she would be caught trying to steal second. Grand View then drew a walk and had a pinch runner but she would also be caught trying to steal second.
 
Grand View had one more batter walk in the inning but a spectacular diving play touching the bag at second by shortstop Ellie Ohlde (Fairbury) ended the inning. Grand View scored no runs on one hit and left one on.
 
Hailey Wessel (Malcolm) got aboard via a single with one out in the bottom of the third. Wessel would advance to second on a wild pitch. Then a Mya Mathes (Ankeny, Iowa) single would have the 'Cats threatening with runners on the corners. Unfortunately, back-to-back strikeouts would end the Bobcat threat. Peru State had no runs on two hits and left two on in the third.
 
Two doubles and a walk would load the bases for the Vikings to start the top of the fourth inning. Then a single scored one run as Grand View led 4-0. A walk on the next at-bat would score another Viking runner.
 
Then a fielder's choice scored the Vikings sixth run of the game. Later in the inning with two outs a single scored two runs as Grand View now led 8-0. Another single would bring in the Vikings ninth run of the game. Grand View scored six runs on five hits and left two on.
 
Carli Kohout (Cortland) hit a one out single in the bottom of the fourth but the 'Cats were unable to bring her around to score as they had no runs on one hit and left one on.

The Vikings went three up three down in the top of the fifth inning. Peru State went down in order in the fifth as they lost the game 9-0.
 
Krieser pitched 3.2 innings giving up nine runs on seven hits and eight runs were earned. Wessel rounded out the pitching for the Bobcats.
 
Kohout, Mathes and Wessel all tied for the lead in hits with one. There were no RBIs.
