DARE program revived for Nebraska City classrooms
Foundation Fund gives $1,500 grant
NEBRASKA CITY – The Nebraska City Community Foundation Fund has provided a grant to help renew the DARE program in Nebraska City schools.
Nebraska City Police Officer Casey Fertig presents the 10-week Drug Abuse Resistance Education program in classrooms to alert students to the dangers of drugs, alcohol and bullying.
Foundation Advisory Committee Chairman Brad Moyer said it is great to have the program back in schools after two years.
He said it is bonding opportunity between students and law enforcement.
Officer Fertig is scheduled for fifth grade classes this spring and eighth grade classes in the fall. Fifth grade programs are expected to continue after 2023.
The foundation fund is providing $1,500. There have also been donations from over 20 local businesses and the Otoe County Board.
The Wirth Foundation is donating funds to bring in a DARE keynote speaker, called Retro Bill, to speak with students.
