NEBRASKA CITY - The Lourdes Central Catholic Academic Decathlon team won first in its category at state competition held Feb. 18-19 at Bellevue University.

Lourdes earned 19 individual medals in tests  and placed third in the small schools category, which includes enrollment under 650.

Decathlon Coach Tammy Partsch said it was gratifying to see the students’ hard work pay off under the “Water:an essential resource” theme.

Partsch: “They have to learn the material, but they also have to learn how to figure out what the best answer is on the  material and it’s college level material. The reason they do this is to help prepare them for college  and help prepare them for the adult world. It makes them better learners and better students in the long run.”

Cora Krog earned bronze in the honors division and Reed Greger, Emma Misner and Andrew Bakula placed in the scholastic division.

Mackenzie Ludwig and Ella Ragland placed in the varsity division.

Lourdes has participated in the decathlon since 1995 and has won the small schools category nine times.
