FALLS CITY - The Nebraska City Pioneer's boys and girls basketball teams traveled to Falls City Tuesday to take on the Falls City Tigers on the hardwood. The two schools split the games, with each school claiming a victory.

On the girls side, Falls City (6-4) lead 4-2 after one quarter before ballooning the lead to 16-3 at the half. An extremely strong press and on-ball pressure lead to numerous Pioneer turnovers and misuses propelling the Tigers to a 41-7 victory.

The defensive effort was conducted by junior guard Madi Jones and fellow sophomores Ava Armbruster and MaKinley Scholl for the Tigers. The trio harassed ball handlers all night and were relentless in transition.

Nebraska City (1-10) had a hard time getting the offense going from the jump against the stingy Falls City defense. The Pioneers also played solid defense throughout the game, but the turnovers generated too many run outs and transition hoops for the Tigers.

Junior Halle Thompson lead the Pioneers with three points.

Nebraska City: 2, 1, 2, 2 - 7

Falls City: 4, 12, 16, 9 - 41

The boys game was a different story for the Pioneers. After a back-and-forth first quarter, Nebraska City jumped out to a 36-24 halftime lead, scoring 23 points in the second quarter.

Nebraska City (4-5) then outscored Falls City (1-8) by 23 points in the second half to pull away, winning in a rout 79-44.

The Pioneers scored the first eight points in the third quarter and never looked back. Seniors Braden Thompson and Nyuon Thuokok provided the highlights of the game when the Nebraska City duo completed breakaway dunks after steals.

At one point, Thompson recorded steals on three consecutive possessions.

Junior Jaxyn Strauss and senior Carson Bredemeier were the catalysts for Falls City on the offensive end, especially in the first quarter. The two guards were aggressive on offense and were able to hit some shots early on.

But the Tigers didn't have enough fire power over the remaining three quarters to pull out the win.
