NEBRASKA CITY - Justin Lewis, 23, of Summerville, S.C., was sentenced to three years probation for felon in possession of a deadly weapon and possession of more than a pound of marijuana in Otoe County in March of 2020.

The Otoe County Sheriff’s Office stopped Lewis on Highway 2 and a K9 was deployed. Investigators say about 130 pounds of marijuana was found in sealed bags in the trunk, as well as a loaded handgun.

District Judge Julie Smith overruled Lewis’s motion to suppress evidence.

The judge said the sheriff’s deputy had probable cause to detain Lewis for a K9 search because he had a rental car, but at age 21 he was not old enough to rent the car and he did not possess of rental agreement. She said Lewis was unable to give the deputy important details about his stated travel plans.
