PLATTSMOUTH -  Cass County authorities have issued an arrest warrant for a Weeping Water man suspected of cruelty to an animal.

David Phillips Jr., 36, is suspected of neglecting a dog named Akita. A Ralston veterinarian reported seeing Akita four years ago at 95 pounds, but estimates his weight at under 60 pounds on Aug.9.

The vet told a sheriff’s deputy that the 11-year-old dog was brought in with open sores on his face, matted hair and maggots embedded in his fur and under his skin.

Court records say Phillips explained that the dog had been injured in a fall the prior day. The vet told deputies that the condition of the dog and the maggots could not have happened in a 24-hour period.
