LINCOLN - Irish eyes are smiling as Falls City Sacred Heart secured its 11th state championship with a 64-47 victory over Parkview Christian on Saturday.
The Irish have now won back-to-back D2 state titles, and have won three of the last four D2 championships. The win also ties Sacred Heart with Wahoo for the fourth-most state championships in Nebraska history, trailing Lincoln Northeast's 12, Creighton Prep's 13, and Lincoln High's 15.
The Patriots jumped out to an early 21-17 lead at the end of the first quarter, but the Irish battled back to trail just 29-27 at the halftime break. From there it was all Irish, as Sacred Heart outscored Parkview Christian 37-18 in the final 16 minutes to close things out and secure another state championship.
The win also marks Sacred Heart Head Coach Doug Goltz's 694th victory, tying him with Duane Mendlik for the most all-time in Nebraska history. Parkview Christian comes up short in its first-ever state championship appearance, and it's the second straight season the Irish have defeated the Patriots in the State Tournament.
