Nebraska City hospital starts Phase 1B, vaccines may prevent third wave of virus
State makes those 65 years old available for Phase 1B vaccine

NEBRASKA CITY – Members of the Nebraska City Health Board reported a stabilization of COVID-19 occurrences at Monday’s meeting, where CHI Health St. Mary’s reported it has begun phase 1B vaccinations.
Dr. Bradley Vasa said the day is coming where masks and social distancing will not be needed, but urged citizens to hold the course for a while longer.
Vasa: “Hopefully, the vaccines will prevent a third wave.”
Hospital Administrator Dr. Dan DeFreece said the hospital began phase 1B vaccines on Friday, despite a blizzard.
He said the hospital continues the process of receiving dosages as the bigger cities complete phase 1A in the coming weeks.
Dr. DeFreece said the state is still working on a website where people can register for a vaccine. Once registered, the state computers are expected to generate a list of those eligible for vaccine, which will be shared with local hospitals.
He said CHI Health Nebraska City expects to be a vaccination site for those lists.
Wendy Snodgrass of the health board reported a change to Phase 1B vaccinations. The age had been 75 and older, but it has been changed to age 65 or older.
Gov. Pete Ricketts issued an executive order authorizing virtual meetings through March 31.
