HUMBOLDT – Matt Lefler and Lindsay Frederick overlooked the smoldering remains of their home of five years Thursday with a clear direction for their family – starting over.

Frederick was working at the pet food manufacturer Alphia in Pawnee City and Lefler was working at Alphia’s plant in Bern, Kan., when they got the call that their house at 529 Central in Humboldt was on fire. By the time they traveled home, the building was gone.

Lefler said a neighbor directly across the street had a doorbell camera that captured a flash of light around 2:40 a.m. It was not long after the neighbors were woke by the sound of breaking glass and called 911. The house was described as already engulfed in flames.

Lefler had caught a ride to work with a friend, so his truck was parked out front. Firefighters called him at work immediately to make sure no one was inside.

Their children, ages 15 and 9, were staying with Lefler’s mother, but the family dog did not survive. Even Lefler’s truck was totaled in the fire, as well as Christmas gifts that had already been delivered.

Lindsay and Matt say all they have left is the clothes they were wearing while at work, but have been encouraged by the kindness and support of the community.
