Carolyn Ruth Schaaf, 93, of Randolph, Iowa entered into rest Thursday December 26th, 2019 at the Tabor Manor Care Center. Carolyn was born September 11th, 1926 in Randolph, Iowa to Rolland Austin Trively and Bernice Elaine (Fichter) Trively. Carolyn grew up on the edge of Randolph raising crops and taking care of livestock with her family. She graduated from Randolph High School in 1943. Carolyn attended Jennie Edmundson College of Nursing in the US Cadet Nurse Corps, graduating with her Nursing Degree in 1947. Carolyn married her high school sweetheart Julius Keith Schaaf on October 19th, 1947 at the Randolph Methodist Church. They were married for nearly 69 years. To this union three children were born, Cheryle Louise (Schaaf) Christiansen, Julius Keith Schaaf Jr., and Grant Trively Schaaf. Keith and Carolyn moved to a farm southeast of Randolph in 1952 where they spent the rest of their farming career raising crops, cattle, hogs, and chickens. Carolyn spent many years working as a nurse at the Shenandoah and Hamburg Hospitals and taking care of their three children.

 

Carolyn retired from nursing in 1973 to take care of Keith and to take a more active role in their farming operation. Carolyn was known for her green thumb raising a lavish garden year after year. She also enjoyed baking, a family and community favorite being her pecan rolls. She was always willing to step up to help anyone, even helping her son farm in the later years of her life. Carolyn was a long time member of the United Methodist Women.

 

Keith and Carolyn spent many winters as snowbirds traveling to South Texas, Arizona, Southern California, and finally the last few years of their travels in Florida. Carolyn enjoyed collecting shells on the beaches during their adventures and filled her home and the homes of her family with beautiful shell creations. She also took up crocheting and made blankets and doll clothes still enjoyed by her family. She also enjoyed attending events in which her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren were involved.

 

Carolyn was preceded in death by her parents, husband Keith, sister Margery Enoch and husband Donald, sister Mary Lousie Hansell, grandson Aaron Grant Schaaf, daughter-in-law Susie (Morrison) Schaaf.

 

She is survived by daughter Cheryle and husband Dean Christiansen of Corona, CA, son Julius and wife Cynthia (Cheney) Schaaf of Randolph, IA, son Grant Schaaf of Randolph, IA, brother-in-law Stanley Hansell of Randolph, IA, sister Sandra and husband James Gregory of Randolph, IA, 9 Grandchildren- Carolyn (McAllister) Kobayashi and husband Hiraku of Chino, CA, Jennifer McAllister and husband Phil of Seattle WA, Carie Hajek and husband Matthew of Austin, TX, Katrina Christiansen of Sacramento, CA, Shane Schaaf and wife Amber of Treynor, IA, Sarah (Schaaf) Ford and husband Phil of Randolph, IA, Preston Schaaf of Montpelier, IA, Olivia Schaaf of Milwaukee, WI and Clara Schaaf of Ames, IA, 13 great-grandchildren, many nieces, nephews and friends.

 

Funeral services will be 10:30 AM Saturday, January 11th, 2020 at the Randolph, Iowa, United Methodist Church with Rev. Jan Phillips officiating. Visitations will be with the family greeting friends from 5:00 to 7:00 PM Friday, January 10th, 2020 at the Crawford-Marshall Funeral Chapel in Tabor, IA. Memorials will go to the Randolph United Methodist Church and interment will be in the Randolph Iowa Cemetery.  

 

The Crawford-Marshall Funeral Chapel in Tabor is in charge of the arrangements.
